High honor for artistic excellence and dedication to fostering young musical talent
On July 20th, 2026, Gerold Huber was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. During a ceremony at the Munich State Theater on Gärtnerplatz, Bavaria’s Minister of Science and the Arts, Markus Blume, presented the award on behalf of the Federal President.
Gerold Huber is one of the most internationally renowned lieder pianists of his generation. Together with his longtime lieder partner Christian Gerhaher, he has shaped the international art of the lieder for decades. As a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, he is also deeply committed to promoting young musical talent.
“Prof. Gerold Huber is one of the outstanding ambassadors of Bavarian musical culture. With the highest level of artistic excellence, he captivates his audiences far beyond the borders of the Free State. At the same time, he passionately passes on his experience to the next generation and supports young musicians on their journey. In doing so, he enriches our musical state of Bavaria in a special way,” said Blume in his tribute.
