Stuttgart-born baritone Michael Nagy is one of the most versatile singers of his generation. He began his musical career with the Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben and subsequently studied voice, conducting, and song interpretation in Mannheim and Saarbrücken under Rudolf Piernay, Klaus Arp, and Irwin Gage. Nagy combines a wide-ranging opera repertoire with an exceptional presence on the concert stage.

Following permanent engagements at the Komische Oper Berlin and Oper Frankfurt, he has appeared in recent years at major international opera houses and renowned festivals. Nagy made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Wolfram in Tannhäuser, took on the role of Beckmesser in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg under Daniele Gatti in 2025, and appeared as Orsini in Rienzi in 2026. A central role in his repertoire is Amfortas in Wagner’s Parsifal, which he has performed at the Bavarian State Opera under Kirill Petrenko, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein under Axel Kober, the Erl Festival under Asher Fisch, and the Vienna State Opera under Alexander Soddy and Philippe Jordan. Other significant roles at the Vienna State Opera include Alberich in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen under Franz Welser-Möst, Morone in Pfitzner’s Palestrina under Christian Thielemann, and Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figarounder Ádám Fischer. Most recently at the Bavarian State Opera, Nagy appeared as Musiklehrer in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos under Daniele Rustioni, Nekrotzar in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre under Kent Nagano, and Ratefreund in Braunfels’s Die Vögel under Ingo Metzmacher. He also performed the role of Šiškov in Janáček’s From the House of the Dead at Oper Frankfurt under Robert Jindra. Nagy has appeared as Jochanaan in Strauss’s Salome in concert with the Orquestra de València under Alexander Liebreich, and as Don Alfonso at the Zurich Opera House and the Salzburg Festival.

In the 2026/2027 season, Michael Nagy once again brings key roles from his repertoire to major international stages. At the Vienna State Opera, he appears as the Musiklehrer in a new production of Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, directed by Barrie Kosky and conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. He performs the role of Amfortas in a concert performance with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra. Nagy makes his house debut at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin as Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde under the baton of Christian Thielemann. Back at the Vienna State Opera, he appears in revivals of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (conducted by Axel Kober) and Arabella (conducted by Constantin Trinks), the latter marking his role debut as Mandryka. Finally, he returns to the Bayreuth Festival, again as Beckmesser, this time under the musical direction of Simone Young.

Michael Nagy is also a sought-after concert artist. He has enjoyed a close collaboration with Helmuth Rilling and the International Bach Academy. His concert engagements include Brahms’s A German Requiem with ensembles such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (under Sir Simon Rattle), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (under Herbert Blomstedt); Haydn’s The Creation with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (under Daniel Harding); and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, most recently with the Vienna Philharmonic (under Andris Nelsons), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (under Klaus Mäkelä), and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (also under Andris Nelsons).

In addition to a repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the Late Romantic eras, he places a special emphasis on 20th-century and contemporary music. For example, Nagy performed as Gabriel in Schoenberg’s Jakobsleiter with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Ingo Metzmacher and sang in Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder under Alan Gilbert; he toured with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Iván Fischer performing Jörg Widmann’s Das heisse Herz, sang Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar) with the Gewandhausorchester, and performed Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14 with the Basel Chamber Orchestra under Heinz Holliger.

In the current season, Michael Nagy is performing Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn’s Elijah in Bologna, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra; he is also presenting his recital program Siècles at the Landsberg Concerts.

  • "From Michael Nagy’s clever, manipulative Ratefreund to Wolfgang Koch’s sonorous Prometheus, this is a top-drawer cast, and all of them sing as if they were expecting to pick up repeat engagements of their roles across the world any day now. Would that they could."
  • "Noseda and his Danish forces offer a thrilling account of this masterpiece, its all-important orchestral detail meticulously realised… as the prisoner, Michael Nagy is alive to every nuance of the role. A thrilling disc, splendidly recorded."
