Born in Stuttgart, the baritone with Hungarian roots began his musical career with the Stuttgart Hymnus Choir Boys and studied singing, song interpretation and conducting with Rudolf Piernay, Irwin Gage and Klaus Arp in Mannheim and Saarbrücken.

He has continued to develop his professional skills on important stages around the world: from Wolfram in Tannhäuser (Bayreuth Festival) to Hans Heiling in H. Marschner's opera of the same name at the Theater an der Wien, Stolzius in Zimmermann's Die Soldaten and Amfortas in Parsifal (under K. Petrenko) at the Bavarian State Opera, Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) in Baden-Baden and Berlin under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, Dallapiccola's Il Prigioniero in Hamburg under the baton of K. Petrenko, the world premiere of Scartazzini's opera Eduardo II in Berlin, as Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte at the Salzburger Festspiele, as Beckmesser in a new production of Wagner's Die Meistersänger at the Frankfurt Opera (stage director: Johannes Erath; conductor: Sebastian Weigle), as Amfortas (Parsifal) under the baton of Philip Jordan, as Alberich in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst at the Vienna State Opera, and as the Count (Le Nozze di Figaro) in Toulouse.

In the season 2023/2024 he will return to the Vienna State Opera as the Count in Le nozze di Figaro under the baton of Adam Fischer (director: Barrie Kosky) and again as Amfortas in Parsifal under Alexander Soddy (directed by Kirill Serebrennikow). He will also perform this role in a new production at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (directed by Michael Thalheimer) under the baton of Axel Kober.  At the Bavarian State Opera he will take on the role of Nekrotzar in Le Grand Macabre under the baton of Kent Nagano (directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski). Furthermore, he will appear in a guest play with the Bavarian State Opera as the music teacher in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in Hongkong.

Michael Nagy is in worldwide demand as a concert and oratorio singer. Engagements have taken him to the most internationally renowned orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, BR Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Orchestre de Paris, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and to various festivals, including Schleswig-Holstein and Rheingau, the Salzburg Festival, the Tanglewood Festival (USA) and the Grafenegg Festival.

The 2023/24 concert season will again offer a broad repertoire with performances of, among others, Jörg Widmann's Das heiße Herz in and the Concertgebouworkest under Iván Fischer in Amsterdam, Berlin and Grafenegg, Beethoven's 9th Symphony under the baton of Karina Canellakis in Berlin and a concert version of Strauss' Salome (for the first time as Jochanaan) under the baton of Alexander Liebreich in Valencia.

  • "From Michael Nagy’s clever, manipulative Ratefreund to Wolfgang Koch’s sonorous Prometheus, this is a top-drawer cast, and all of them sing as if they were expecting to pick up repeat engagements of their roles across the world any day now. Would that they could."
  • "Noseda and his Danish forces offer a thrilling account of this masterpiece, its all-important orchestral detail meticulously realised… as the prisoner, Michael Nagy is alive to every nuance of the role. A thrilling disc, splendidly recorded."
