Amidst the mountainous landscape of South Tyrol, in the Ladin-speaking village of La Val, the musical journey of baritone Andrè Schuen began. Raised trilingually (Ladin, Italian, and German), his versatility is reflected in a repertoire that ranges from Italian bel canto and German Lied to major operatic roles. He first trained as a cellist before deciding to pursue vocal studies at the renowned Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where he was shaped by Prof. Horiana Brănișteanu and Prof. Wolfgang Holzmair. After graduation, he became a member of the ensemble at Oper Graz. Today, he performs on the world’s most important opera, concert, and recital stages.
As an opera singer, Andrè Schuen appears regularly at leading houses such as the Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro Real Madrid, and La Scala Milan, as well as at the festivals in Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, and Lucerne. In the current season, he sings Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro with the Vienna State Opera on tour in Japan (cond.: Bertrand de Billy / dir.: Barrie Kosky) and at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (cond.: Giovanni Antonini / dir.: Marta Pazos). He also returns to La Scala Milan as Donner in Wagner’s Das Rheingold (cond.: Alexander Soddy and Simone Young / dir.: David McVicar).
A further focus lies on roles in Verdi’s operas: in Berlin, he sings Ford in Falstaff at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden (cond.: Giuseppe Mentuccia / dir.: Mario Martone), followed by Rodrigo in Don Carlo at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (cond.: Juraj Valčuha / dir.: Marco Arturo Marelli).
Among his recent highlights are his Carnegie Hall debut in Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s (cond.: Bernard Labadie); appearances at the Munich Opera Festival as Wolfram in Tannhäuser (dir.: Romeo Castellucci); his role debut as Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Royal Opera House London; and the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in summer 2025 (cond.: Sir Simon Rattle). He has appeared several times in Salzburg, most recently in 2023 as the Count in a new production of Le nozze di Figaro and in summer 2025 in a recital programme.
In concert, he has performed Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer with the Swedish and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestras, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under Andris Nelsons with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and again under Sir Simon Rattle with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. In Asia, he performs Vaughan Williams’s Sea Symphony with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden, joined by the HK Phil Chorus and the London Philharmonic Choir.
Lied remains one of Andrè Schuen’s greatest passions. Together with his long-standing piano partner Daniel Heide, he appears this season in cities including Milan, Trento, Turin, Florence, Madrid, Alicante, Graz, Vienna, and Berlin (Pierre Boulez Saal). The duo also performs at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg/Hohenems, Wigmore Hall London, Tokyo Spring Festival, Schubertiada Vilabertran, Heidelberger Frühling, and Rheingau Musik Festival. In the U.S., Schuen has given recitals at Tanglewood and the Aspen Music Festival.
In July 2025, his new album Mozart was released by Deutsche Grammophon, recorded with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg under Roberto González-Monjas. As an exclusive artist of the label, Andrè Schuen has received wide acclaim for his Schubert recordings, including Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, and Schwanengesang.
