A Great Honor for Maestro Blomstedt: Praemium Imperiale 2026
Established in 1988 by the Japan Arts Association and awarded in memory of Japanese Prince Takamatsu, the prize is considered the “Nobel Prize of the Arts” and honors extraordinary achievements in the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theater/film. Over the course of his more than 70-year career, Herbert Blomstedt has made a name for himself worldwide, particularly through his mastery of the score, his natural authority, his modesty, and his collaborative relationship with the orchestras with which he performs. His artistic approach is strongly shaped by a deep humanistic and religious ethos. It fills us with the greatest joy and gratitude that Herbert Blomstedt‘s contributions to music and his life’s work are being honored with one of the most prestigious awards the music world has to offer.
