Franz-Josef Selig has established himself on the international scene as one of the best-known serious bass baritones. He regularly gives guest performances as Gurnemanz, King Mark, Sarastro, Rocco, Osmin, Daland, Fiesco and Fasolt at all the world’s major opera houses (such as the Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Teatro Real Madrid, the Parisian opera houses or the Metropolitan Opera New York) and at prestigious festivals such as the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festival and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Opera productions as well as concerts bring him together frequently with renowned orchestras and conductors, such as Christian Thielemann, Sir Simon Rattle, Marek Janowski, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Muti, Yannick Nezét-Séguin, Antonio Pappano, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta and many others.

Bass singer Franz-Josef Selig first studied church music at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne before taking voice classes under Claudio Nicolai. At the beginning of his career he was a member of the Aalto Theatre ensemble in Essen. He has since been a freelance singer.

Interesting activities in the 2019/20 season include operatic performances in concert as Rocco in Fidelio with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Järvi in Toyko and Hunding (The Valkyries) with the Dresdner Philharmonie under Marek Janowski. At the Theater an der Wien he sings under Betrand de Billy in Spontinis La Vestale, at the MET in New York in a new production of Wagner’s The flying Dutchman (Role: Daland) under Valery Gergiev and at the Royal Opera House in Tristan and Isolde (Role: King Mark) under Semyon Bychkov.

In celebration of Beethoven’s 250 anniversary Franz-Josef Selig performs Beethoven’s 9th Symphony various times: at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam under Franz-Welser Möst, at the Prague Spring Festival under Semyon Bychkov and with the Chcicago Symphony Orchestra under Riccardo Muti. With the Symphoniker Hamburg he performs Sofia Gubaidulina’s oratorio ‘Über Liebe und Hass’ (About love and hate) – a piece he already world premiered in 2016 – in Hamburg.

In addition to his numerous operatic engagements and concert performances it is important to Franz-Josef Selig to find time for lieder recitals, recently with Gerold Huber in Katowice, Cologne, Frankfurt, London and Madrid. In this season he performs his new Lieder programme with Gerold Huber in Brussels at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie.

Numerous CD and DVD productions document the artistic range of this remarkable singer – from Bach’s St Matthew Passion to Mozart’s Magic Flute (The Royal Opera, London/Sir Colin Davis), Don Giovanni (Vienna State Opera/Riccardo Muti), Le nozze di Figaro (Salzburg Festival/Nikolaus Harnoncourt), and Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Gran Teatre del Liceu/Ivor Bolton/Christoph Loy) as well as L’incoronazione di Poppea (Gran Teatre del Liceu/David Alden/Harry Bicket). He has recorded the part of Gurnemanz in Wagner’s Parsifal both under Christian Thielemann (Vienna State Opera, released by Deutsche Grammophon) and with Marek Janowski and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (Pentatone).

Franz-Josef Selig participated in many opera productions that were subsequently released on DVD, including Der Fliegende Holländer from Bayreuth (Thielemann/Gloger), Der Ring des Nibelungen (Metropolitan Opera New York), which received a Grammy in 2013, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Die Zauberflöte, both from the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin (all Deutsche Grammophon). His first solo recital CD (AVI), accompanied by Gerold Huber at the piano, was released in 2014 and combines lieder of Schubert, Wolf and Strauss under the title of Prometheus (AVI).
