Christiane Iven was born in Hamburg and studied in her home city under Judith Beckmann. She furthered her studies by taking part in Lieder interpretation courses led by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. She has won the German Music Competition and several international competitions.
 
As a member of the Staatsoper Stuttgart for several years, the versatile soprano singer has captivated audiences with her renditions of Feldmarschallin (Rosenkavalier), Agathe (Freischütz), Didon (Les Troyens) and Kundry (Parsifal) amonst others. Christiane Iven began her singing career at the Bremer Theater before moving to the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Staatsoper Hannover, where she met with tremendous acclaim for her interpretations of Elvira (Don Giovanni) and Emilia Marty (Makropulos Case) in the production by Luc Perceval. She was honoured with the Niedersächsischer Staatspreis for her artistic achievements. Over the past few years she has been a guest at various European opera houses, with performances that have included Sieglinde (Walküre) in Budapest and Feldmarschallin in Rome.
 
Christiane Iven has also achieved tremendous success as a concert and Lied singer. She has performed with eminent orchestras and conductors such as the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Bamberger Symphoniker, NDR and SWR Symphony orchestras, Oslo Philharmonic under Heinz Holliger, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande with Fabio Luisi, Rundfunksinfonieorchester Berlin, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre Chambre de Lausanne under Christian Zacharias, Orchestra della Scala under Riccardo Chailly and many more.
 
Together with Thomas Quasthoff and Justus Zeyen, she made her much acclaimed debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus with Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch. Accompanied by pianists such as András Schiff and Burkhard Kehring, or performing alongside Liese Klahn and Bruno Ganz (Marienleben by Hindemith) her recitals have received outstanding reviews. She has made guest performances at a variety of major music festivals, such as the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Kissinger Sommer, Festival Lucerne and Schwetzinger Festspiele. Recordings recently released feature Christiane Iven singing Schumann’s Faust-Szenen with the Concertgebouworkest conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Lieder by Alban Berg performed with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg under Marc Albrecht.
 
Christiane Iven starts the new season 2011/12 singing at the Music Festival Stuttgart (Elgar’s Sea Pictures/Vaughan-Williams’ Sea Symphony) and the Taipeh Philharmonic Orchestra (Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde and Rückert-Lieder), followed by concerts in Berlin with the RIAS Chamber Choir (Beethoven’s Missa solemnis), in Valencia (Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony) and Strasbourg (Mahler’s 4th Symphony /Wesendonck-Lieder). Recitals lead her to the Staatsoper Stuttgart and the Wigmore Hall London. She can be seen this season on stage in Stuttgart performing the roles of Agathe, Katja Kabanova as well as Marie (Wozzeck) in a new production by Andrea Moses. Beside her engagement as Feldmarschallin at the Komische Oper Berlin, she will also give her debut as Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) under Adam Fischer in Budapest. Her next CD to be published is Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the SWR Symphony Orchestra and Michael Gielen for hänssler classics.
