Christiane Iven embodies this inconceivable, abysmal character. She plays and sings as if it was her life that was at stake and not the life of an artifical character. Christiane Iven succeeds in embodying this character in a staggeringly terrific way. She dominates the events and forms the backbone of the staging. Director Luk Perceval pushed the artist to the limits of the possible. She follows this way…“ (Süddeutsche Zeitung).

Soprano
Christiane Iven
Christiane Iven was born in Hamburg and studied in her home city under Judith Beckmann. She furthered her studies by taking part in Lieder interpretation courses led by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. She has won the German Music Competition and several international competitions.
Having started her singing career at the Bremen Theatre and the Mannheim National Theatre as a mezzo-soprano, she made the transition to the youthful dramatic soprano genre at the Staatsoper in Hannover singing Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Marschallin (Rosenkavalier) and Marie in Berg’s Wozzeck. She was honoured with the Niedersächsischer Staatspreis for her artistic achievements. Her interpretation of Emilia Marty in Janáĉek’s The Makropulos Case directed by Luk Perceval received great critical acclaim in the press.
With her renditions of Agathe (Freischütz), Sieglinde (Walküre) and the Feldmarschallin (Rosenkavalier) which she sang at the Opera House in Rome last season, she has established herself within her new field with great success. A member of the Staatsoper Stuttgart for the past three years, Christiane Iven is engaged to continue performing with them for the next few years, and this season will appear in two new productions: as Feldmarschallin (Rosenkavalier) directed by Stefan Herheim, and as Kundry (Parsifal) in a production by Calixto Bieito. Both productions are to be directed by Manfred Honeck. Christiane Iven has also been invited to Budapest to sing the part of Sieglinde (Walküre).
This versatile artist has also achieved tremendous success as a concert and Lied singer. She has performed with eminent orchestras and conductors such as the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Bamberger Symphoniker, NDR and SWR Symphony orchestras, Oslo Philharmonic under Heinz Holliger, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande with Fabio Luisi, Rundfunksinfonieorchester Berlin, Orchestra della Scala under Riccardo Chailly and many more.
Together with Thomas Quasthoff and Justus Zeyen, she made her much acclaimed debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus with Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch. Her most recent recitals in Amsterdam, Hitzacker, Herrenchiemsee, Ittingen and Hannover, where she was accompanied by Andras Schiff and Burkhard Kehring amongst others, received outstanding reviews.
She has made guest performances at a variety of major music festivals, such as the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Festival Lucerne, Kissinger Sommer and Schwetzinger Festspiele. Several radio and CD recordings document her extensive repertoire. Her recording of Schumann’s Faust-Szenen conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and performed with the Concertgebouworkest has recently been released.
Her recording of Lieder by Alban Berg with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg under Marc Albrecht is due to appear in autumn 2009.
Christiane Iven will start the current season singing Hindemith's Marienleben with Bruno Ganz at venues such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. She has been invited to perform Liszt Lieder at the Kunstfest Weimar by Heinz Holliger. In the 2009/10 season she will sing Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder in Turin under Marc Albrecht and at the Philharmonie Essen under Christoph Poppen, and is also engaged to perform the Berlioz piece La Mort de Cleopatre with Eliahu Inbal at concerts in Prague as well as his work Nuits d’été at the Münchner Philharmoniker with Christian Zacharias.
